At the turn of the 20th century, an auctioneer stood on the corner of Ponsonby Road and Cowan Street and declared this site the "finest stand on Ponsonby Road."
Over 118 years later, looking at our newly completed heritage building, we think it still is.
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that this iconic, heritage-listed 1908 building has officially opened its doors as the new home of Australasian beauty giant, MECCA.
Restoring History, Reimagining the Future
Our goal for the project was to restore the heritage property and deliver a functional, modern space for retail tenants.
Designed by renowned interior design studio Hecker Guthrie, MECCA's new 323sqm space thoughtfully preserves the building’s original 1908 character, including its pressed metal ceilings, & original timber while seamlessly introducing a sleek, modern, and immersive interior fit-out.

MECCA opened its first New Zealand store in Ponsonby in 2007. Located a few blocks from the original site, the new location is nearly triple the size and features:
95+ Brands: Includes 31 brands new to Ponsonby, such as rhode, Charlotte Tilbury, Glossier, and Le Labo.
Expanded Perfumeria: A dedicated space featuring niche fragrance houses like DS & Durga and Escentric Molecules.
In-Store Services: Dedicated makeup stations, personalized fragrance consultations, and a semi-private skin bed for treatments.
The grand opening morning kicked off in true Ponsonby style. The day began with a beautiful, moving blessing ceremony delivered in partnership with local iwi, followed by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Eager beauty lovers queued down Ponsonby Road from the early hours of the morning, welcomed with fresh pastries from our local favorites at Daily Bread, alongside limited-edition MECCA Ponsonby keyrings and luxury gifts from Emma Lewisham.
From MECCA's humble beginnings in Melbourne in 1997 to a network of 15 locations across New Zealand today, we couldn't be prouder that the next chapter of their journey unfolds right here at PoP
